RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech announced Thursday that it has scheduled a home-and-home football series with South Alabama beginning in 2017 and extending into 2018.
LA Tech will host South Alabama on Sept. 30, 2017 in Ruston and then will travel to Mobile, Ala. on Sept. 1, 2018. Both game times are still to be determined. The Jaguars will join the Sun Belt Conference as a full-fledged FBS member beginning in 2013.
South Alabama is in its second year of competition in 2010 and has spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as a non-classified football team. The Jaguars, who play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl host site of Land-Peebles Stadium, have gone undefeated while playing prep schools and junior colleges in 2009 (7-0) and facing several FCS and lower level schools in 2010 (10-0). USA will begin play as an FCS transitional member in 2011 before moving up to the FBS ranks in 2013.
Just under a six hour drive from Ruston, this series adds yet another regional opponent in the coming years that LA Tech fans can easily travel to. Other regional non-conference opponents - such as Houston, Southern Miss, UTSA, Ole Miss and Mississippi State - dot future Louisiana Tech football schedules.
The Bulldogs host No. 14 Nevada for a chance at bowl eligibility Saturday at 2 p.m. Louisiana Tech has a chance to become bowl eligible for the fifth time in 10 years with a win over the nationally-ranked Wolf Pack.
