Football Places Three on C-USA All-Freshman Team
Dec. 10, 2013
IRVING, Texas - Conference USA announced its 2013 All-Freshman football team Tuesday with three Bulldogs being selected to the league’s rookie team.
Louisiana Tech’s three selections matched the three selections from East Carolina and Marshall and trailed only Marshall’s five selections. The three selections from LA Tech include defensive back Xavier Woods, kick returner Tevin King and kicker Kyle Fischer.
Woods, a product of West Monroe, was fourth on the team with 61 total tackles in his true freshman season. He registered three tackles for a loss of five yards and was credited with two pass break-ups while playing in all 12 games.
Despite being limited by a high ankle sprain during the middle of the season, King led the team with a 28.8 kickoff return average. A redshirt freshman after a knee injury shortened his 2012 season, King returned five kicks for a total of 144 yards and had a long return of 41 yards.
Fischer, a walk-on redshirt freshman, was 18-for-23 on field goal attempts in 2013 for a 78.3 conversion percentage. He hit four field goals of 40 yards or more including a season-best 49-yard field goal against Lamar. He also kicked off 41 times for a total of 2,464 yards, averaging 60.1 yards per kickoff with 11 touchbacks on the year.
The Conference USA All-Freshman team were selected by a vote of the league’s coaches with coaches not being able to vote for their own players. Only true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were eligible for the honor.
