Ryan Allen and Quinton Patton Named to AP All-America Teams

Dec. 11, 2012

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech punter Ryan Allen and wide receiver Quinton Patton were named 2012 All-Americans Tuesday by the Associated Press.

Allen was named to the first team while Patton received second team honors.

A native of Salem, Ore., Allen led the nation in punting this season with an average of 48.04 yards per punt and leads the nation in net punting with a net punting average of 43.51. He booted the longest punt this season of any punter in the country with an 85-yard kick at New Mexico State. Over 44 percent of his punts this season have landed inside the 20 and over 46 percent of his punts have gone over 50 yards. Last week Allen became the first player to ever win the Ray Guy Award (nation’s top punter) in back-to-back years.

Patton, a native of La Vergne, Tenn., caught 104 passes for 1,392 yards and 13 touchdowns in 12 games this season. He finished the year averaging 13.4 yards per catch and 116.0 yards per game, ranking fourth in the nation in receiving yards per game and fifth in the nation in receptions per game. Patton was also fifth in the nation in touchdowns scored among wide receivers.

Already a 2012 consensus All-American, Allen has received similar honors by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), CBS Sports, the Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognizes College Football All-America Teams selected by the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News, and the Walter Camp Football Foundation (WCFF) to determine consensus All-Americans.

An athlete must be selected by three of those five entities as a First Team All-American to receive consensus status and by all five to be considered a unanimous All-American. Allen joins Willie Roaf (1992) and Troy Edwards (1998) as Tech’s consensus All-Americans. No Bulldog player has ever been named unanimous All-American. The FWAA announces its All-America team on Friday.
