Bulldog Golfers Beat Pair of Top 100 Teams

Oct. 20, 2009

MEMPHIS - Louisiana Tech senior Matthew Harvey recorded his best outing of the fall as he shot a three-round total of six-over-par 222 to finish 10 at the Memphis Intercollegiate held at the Colonial Country Club.

Harvey succeeded despite difficult playing conditions as wind and cold temperatures were par for the course during the two-day event which featured 16 teams, including six teams ranked in the Top 100 in the nation.

As a team the Bulldogs finished tied for 13th, although they beat a pair of Top 100 ranked teams in 74th ranked Arkansas State and 89th ranked Louisiana-Lafayette.

After getting off to a tough start by firing an opening round 81, sophomore Cody Santone recovered to shot a 75 and 72 over the final two rounds as he finished tied for 37th - his first none Top 10 finish of the fall.

In addition to Harvey and Santone, other Bulldogs who competed at the event were Joel Thelen (231, T50th), Jonathan Bale (237, T74th) and Clinton Shepard (242, T84th).

After a difficult first day of the event, head coach Jeff Parks Bulldogs shot the fifth lowest team round on Tuesday's third and final round as the Bulldogs tied with Xavier for 13th place.

South Alabama captured the team title with a total of 882 led by Marc-Ettienne Bussieres who won the individual competition with a nine-under-par 207, the only golfer in the 90-man field to shoot in red figures.

After the Jaguars, the order of finish was Arkansas Little Rock, Southern Miss, 71st ranked Iowa State, Denver, 48th ranked Ohio State, Memphis, 60th ranked Mississippi State, Wisconsin, 96th ranked Maryland, 52nd ranked Louisville, Penn State, LA Tech, Xavier, 74th ranked Arkansas State and 89th ranked UL-Lafayette.
