Golf Opens Spring Season at UTSA Oak Hills Invitational

Feb. 9, 2014

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech’s golf team will open the spring season Monday in San Antonio, Texas as the Bulldogs face five top-75 opponents at the UTSA’s Oak Hills Invitational.

That tournament, hosted at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, will open a challenging spring season filled with six regular season tournaments with the goal of moving up high enough in the rankings to enter the discussion for an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals.

That first step to move up the rankings ladder starts as Louisiana Tech will face a field highlighted by No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 30 Baylor at the Oak Hills Invitational.

Other teams the Bulldogs look to upend include No. 46 Southeastern Louisiana, No. 67 East Carolina and No. 75 Louisiana-Lafayette. LA Tech enters the spring season ranked 119th.

“We had a good offseason of workouts since the fall season ended,” head coach Jeff Parks said. “The weather the last few weeks has made it difficult to play much on a full course but we have been able to work on technique in our indoor hitting facility.”

Louisiana Tech enters the spring season ranked ninth in Conference USA but only 45 spots separate nine teams, marking a very even league.

“Overall the players are disappointed in the way they performed last fall,” said Parks. “They know they are better than how they played and are eager to show that on the course this spring.”

The Oak Hills Invitational will be the first of two trips to San Antonio for the Bulldogs this spring with another trip scheduled for March 24-25 when UTSA hosts the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. The field at the Lone Star Invitational is expected to be challenging as Briggs Ranch and UTSA will host an NCAA Regional in May.

“I am excited about where we are playing this spring and the opponents we will face. Each win we record in those tournaments will help propel us towards hopefully getting a regional bid in May.”
