Tech's Chad Carter Turns In Rice Intercollegiate's Best Round

HOUSTON -- Louisiana Tech's Chad Carter turned in the tournament's best round Tuesday to help Louisiana Tech tie for a ninth-place finish in the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament at Wildcat Golf Course.

Tech shot rounds of 305 and 294 to finish at 599. Monday's opening round was delayed by rain, shortening the event by 18 holes.

Carter, a junior out of Franklin Academy in Winnsboro, La., was one of only two golfers to break a round of 70 in the rain-shortened two-round event and finished in a tie for fourth place in individual play with a 144 after shooting 76 on Monday. Carter fired in a tournament-low 68 in round two, edging Nebraska's Brady Schnell, who turned in a round of 69 on Tuesday to finish tied along with Carter and four others for fourth place (144).

"It was great to see Chad come around and shoot the way he did today," Tech coach Dr. Jean Hall said. "The weather made it tough for everyone (on Monday), but Chad shook it off and really played well out there today."

Preston Smith shot a 76 in round one and 75 in round two to finish in a tie for 33rd (151) while teammate Derek Busby shot a 75 and 77 to tie for 43th place (152). Bulldog Jason Jenkins joined Busby in a tied for 43rd with rounds of 78 and 74 (152) while junior Logan Riester rounded out Tech's efforts with a 82 and 77 to tie for 75th place (159).

North Texas won the tournament with a 584, one stroke in front of second-place Memphis at 587. Following the top two finishers with Sam Houston State (587), Texas-Arlington (589), Nebraska, Texas State and Rice (595), Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech (599), Louisiana-Lafayette (602), Texas-San Antonio (603), Army (606), DePaul (616) and Texas-Pan American (620).

Anthony Broussard of North Texas took individual honors with a 141 (71-70), followed by North Texas State's Ryan Cromwell and Texas-Arlington's Jordan Krantz at 143.

Louisiana Tech returns to action on March 14 at the Carter Plantation Tournament hosted by Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La.
