RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech head golf coach Jeff Parks announced Thursday that the Bulldog golf program has added to transfers to the team. Chuck Spears joins the Bulldogs from LSU while Preston Standley transfers in from North Texas.
The two transfers round out a full team roster of 10 golfers for the 2013-14 season. That list includes five returning lettermen and five newcomers. The Bulldogs only lost one letterman from last year's squad, Sam Forgan.
Spears will be a sophomore this year as he joins the LA Tech Family after competing for one season at LSU. During his freshman campaign in Baton Rouge, Spears averaged 80.2 strokes per round. A native of Pineville, Spears was the No. 1-ranked recruit in the state of Louisiana for the Class of 2012 and was also the No. 58-ranked recruit for his class. He was also a back-to-back Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Champion.
Standley will be a redshirt freshman this year after redshirting his true freshman year at North Texas. A former all-State selection from his native Texas, Standley was ranked as the No. 88 recruit in the country in the Class of 2012. He was also ranked as the second-best player in the state of Texas in 2010 by Golfweek.
Louisiana Tech opens the 2013-14 season on Sept. 15-17 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge hosted by Iowa at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. The Bulldogs will be competing in a tournament that will feature 15 teams from 15 different conferences.
