Riester Shines on First Day of North Texas Tournament
DENTON, Texas – Louisiana Tech senior Logan Riester shot two solid rounds Monday in the first day of the North Texas Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic at Lantana Country Club.
Riester shot 71-71 for a two-round total of 142, good for a tie for sixth place overall in the individual standings and only two strokes off the lead.
“Logan Riester played very well,” said Tech head coach Jean Hall. “I’m very proud of him. He played college golf like it should be played.”
Riester was the lone bright spot for Tech during the morning round before all the Bulldogs settled down to shoot 19 strokes better as a team in the afternoon.
All five of the Bulldogs (with the exception of Riester) improved their scores during the afternoon session, including junior Trey McNeil who rebounded from a morning round of 81 to shoot an impressive four-under par 68 during the final day’s round.
“Basically, inexperience got us during the first 18,” Hall said. “Five of our six guys were playing in a collegiate tournament for the first time. Their inexperience showed. They were a little nervous and anxious. I think they settled down in the afternoon and played much better.”
In addition to Riester and McNeil, Corey Bartlett (77-76=153), Amrith DeSoysa (80-73=153), Taylor Gregg (79-78=157) and Mark Volk Jr. (82-77=159) all competed for the Bulldogs.
As a team, Tech sits in 11th place in the 14-team tournament with a two-round total of 595.
The final round of the tournament will conclude Tuesday morning.
