LA Tech Golf Among Tough Field in Albuquerque

Sept. 21, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Coming off the heels of a top three finish at its season-opening event, Louisiana Tech travels west to compete against a tough field at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship South Course Friday and Saturday.

Head coach Matt Terry's Bulldogs join Arizona, BYU, Cal State-Fullerton, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Louisiana Tech, UNLV, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UT-Arlington, UTEP, San Diego, San Diego State, Washington and Washington State. The field includes six top 50 teams and 11 top 100 teams, including 10th ranked UNLV.

"It's a really good field," said Terry. "We will practice Thursday and then compete Friday and Saturday. I'm excited to see how they handle that. It's always different when you get on the road, mountain environment and a different golf course. They have some confidence so it will be interesting to see. I'm pleased to get a top three finish in our first event and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."

The Bulldogs opened their season Monday and Tuesday, finishing third in the 14-team Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Golf Course. Joacim Ahlund and Felix Palson led the Bulldogs strong showing by recording top five finishes at the event as Tech shot under par as a team in each of the final two rounds.

Ahlund and Palson will be joined in New Mexico by Karsten Green, Ryan Alford and Hayden Frederick as the five will compete on the challenging par 72, 7,556 yard championship course. Tech finished 13th out of 16 teams last year recording a three-round total of 49 over par. Last year's tournament champion San Diego was the lone team to shoot in the red in the 2016 event.
