RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech’s golf team returns to action this weekend as the Bulldogs head to Baton Rouge for the annual David Toms Intercollegiate.
The tournament, hosted by LSU at the University Club, is a two-day, 54-hole championship that starts Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. with two 18-hole rounds followed by a single round on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The team will hit the course Friday morning for the practice round.
“I am really looking forward to this event,” said LA Tech head coach Jeff Parks. “All five of our guys competing played at the University club last year. We have been practicing specific shots for that course and hope to improve on our play from last year.”
The five Bulldogs tabbed for this weekend’s tournament are senior Jack Lempke, senior Travis Wilmore, sophomore Victor Lange, sophomore Chuck Spears and sophomore Ben Robinson. Freshman John Lewis Sams will be competing as an individual. Spears is making his first return to Baton Rouge since transferring to Louisiana Tech from LSU.
LA Tech placed fifth in last year’s tournament, finishing six shots ahead of Ole Miss and only four shots behind Mississippi State. Travis Wilmore was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, tying for sixth place as he shot a 9-over-par 225.
Houston, ranked 19th in the first Golfweek Rankings of the year, leads the field followed by host No. 22 LSU. Iowa State rounds out the group of top-30 ranked teams coming in at No. 30.
The Bulldogs will get their first test against schools in Conference USA this weekend as Middle Tennessee and Rice also are part of the 12-team field. Rounding out the tournament field is Coastal Carolina, Kennesaw State, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, South Alabama and Southeastern Louisiana.
