Smith Leads Bulldogs to Sixth Place Finish in Lufkin, Texas

Despite an extremely windy day at The Stephen F. Austin Crown Classic, the Tech golf team improved to sixth place in the final standings with a final total of 911 (299-303-309).

"The conditions on the course were extremely rough today," Stinson said. "There was a 20-25 miles per hour wind blowing all day. All of us coaches just looked at each other and said,'There goes our averages.'"

Every team's score was higher in the final round, but Tech's final day score of 309 still managed jump them ahead of conference opponent Rice on the par-72, 6,692 yard course.

"There are some days when shooting a 300 isn't bad," Stinson said. "Today was one of those days, considering the conditions, but our boys didn't play bad. We're just glad we jumped on top of Rice because they're in our conference."

Tech was led by freshman Preston Smith, who medalled in the event by shooting a 225 (73-74-78) and finishing tied for 12th place. Sophomore Logan Riester scored a 227 (79-73-75), junior Chase Hemperley added a 230 (74-80-76) while sophomore Derek Busby recorded a 232 (73-79-80) and sophomore Chad Carter finished with a total of 238 (80-77-81).
