LA Tech Golf Signs Three to NLI's
Nov. 28, 2012
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech head coach Jeff Parks announced the addition of three high school prep stars as the Bulldog golf program signed a trio of talented young men during the early period.
Parks signed Hayden Frederick (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield HS), Mitchell Haddox (Ruston, La./Ruston HS) and John Lewis Sams (Coushatta, La./Riverdale Academy) to national letters of intent as the trio will join the Bulldogs this fall.
"It is nice to know that these young men have the skills to perform at the college level, but it is even better to know that they are great guys with good character and will be awesome representatives of our University and our community," Parks said. "I look forward to seeing them compete in the upcoming years."
Frederick has helped lead the Tigers to the district title each of the past three years while also guiding Mansfield to the Texas Class 5A state title in 2011.
"Hayden is coming to us from Mansfield, Texas and is ranked No. 22 in the class of 2013 in the state of Texas according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard," Parks said. "He comes from a very strong high school program and has competed all over the country in AJGA events throughout his career. He has prepared himself to be able to step up and play at the next level of golf."
Frederick was named first team all-district and second team all-state as a senior while finishing second as the district championships in 2012. As a senior, he finished fourth (out of 50) at the Fall Cup, seventh (out of 120) at the Denton Invitational, ninth (out of 120) at the Fall State Preview and 14th (out of 260) at the Bart Granger.
On the amateur circuit, he was the runner-up at the 2010 Ft. Worth City Championship and finished sixth at the 2011 Rocky Mountain Golf Association Tour Championships.
"I chose Louisiana Tech because there are great opportunities that come with playing golf for the school and getting a degree from the university," Frederick said. "I wanted to go to a college that has great facilities and a competitive golf team, and I feel like La Tech has both of those. I am looking forward to improving by playing and practicing at Squire Creek, and I am looking forward to winning championships and tournaments with the team. Louisiana Tech will be a great place to spend my next four years."
Haddox is a local product out of Ruston High School who ranks No. 3 in the state of Louisiana in the Class of 2013. He led the Bearcats to the regional championship.
"Mitchell is from our own backyard of Ruston," Parks said. "He is a home-grown product that has proven he deserves to be a Bulldog. Mitchell had a full summer of golf on the AJGA tour as well, finishing in the top 25 in all 4 events he competed in. He shot the low round of 66 in the final round at the Steelwood AJGA this summer."
Haddox, the son of Greg and Debbie, earned all-state honors for the Bearcats while finishing 12th at the Louisiana Class 5A State Tournament held at Copper Mill. On the amateur tour, Haddox finished 13th at the 2012 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) at Steelwood presented by AT&T in which he fired a final round and tournament low score of 66. He also finished 18th at the 2012 KPMG Stacy Lewis Junior Open.
"I chose to attend Louisiana Tech because Coach Parks is a great coach and a great person and has helped me out with the mental part of the game," Haddox said. "Also Brad Pullin has spent so much time helping me with my swing and has helped me get where I am today. Finally, Squire Creek is a great venue and is one of the perks of playing for the Bulldogs. I am ready to represent LA Tech."
Sams is the No. 4 ranked golfer in the state of Louisiana for the Class of 2013 as he has spent his high school career at Riverdale Academy, helping lead the Rebels to the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) South A championship three times.
"John Lewis comes from a family that attended LA Tech and has been raised with Bulldog blood," Parks said. "He also played in numerous events on the AJGA tour over the past few summers and had two top 10 finishes last summer. He won a Texas Junior Golf Tour tournament last summer with an accomplished field of players. We are excited to have a player who knows what it takes to win and put in the effort to make that happen."
As a junior at Riverdale Academy, Sams captured the MAIS Class 2A state individual title while leading the Rebels to the state team title. This past fall, he finished as the state individual runner-up. He won 15 of the 23 tournaments in which he competed during his high school career.
Sams also captured individual titles at the 2012 Texas PGA tournament at Holly Tree and the 2012 TJGT Tyler Rose Major Championship. He placed 1st, 2nd and 4th at AGJA qualifiers this summer and ranked in the top 300 in the nation on the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"I have always desired to play Division I college golf at Louisiana Tech," Sams. "The program, coaching staff and practice facility in my opinion are some of the best in the nation. Jeff Parks not only has interest in recruiting skilled golfers but also quality guys. I have many friends and family members that are students and alumni of Tech and feel the university is a good match for me. I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to spending the next four years being a Bulldog at Louisiana Tech."
