Tech’s de Soysa at Asian Games

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech sophomore golfer Amrith de Soysa was selected to represent his home country of Sri Lanka and participate in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

According to de Soysa, the Asian Games are “pretty much like the Olympics” but restricted to the 46 countries located in Asia, with each country selecting its best four amateur golfers to represent them.

“The city is revolving around the games right now and it’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of it,” de Soysa said. “I’m staying at the Athletes Village and it’s amazing. The city of Doha is famous for exporting oil, and it has spent billions of dollars on this event.”

De Soysa, who is one of Louisiana Tech’s top golfers, said the event is played like a team event in college where each country takes the best three out of four scores daily in a four-round tournament. De Soysa is playing as Sri Lanka’s No. 1 golfer.
