Tech Track and Field Goes for Five Straight
May 14, 2009
LOGAN, Utah--For the fourth year in a row the Louisiana Tech women's track and field team will be trying to defend their outdoor conference title this weekend while the men will look to improve on an impressive third place finish from a year ago.
"First of all we definitely want to defend our conference title on the women's side and win the WAC for the fifth straight year," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "Our men were real close last year and I think they will compete well again this year. We're a little concerned about how we will handle the weather up here in Utah, but I think we should be ok."
The Lady Techster's won last year's WAC outdoor championship in Boise, Idaho by a total of 51 points while the Bulldogs finished third place, missing out on second place by just half of a point and missing the conference title by only seven and a half points.
Tech enters the Conference Championship with eight individual regional qualifiers and two relay teams with regional qualifying times.
On the women's side the regional qualifiers are Chasidee Lewis-Baker (100m), Antoinette Cobb (100 Hurdles), Nadia Alexander (shot put), Quatisha Williams (Triple Jump) along with the 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams.
Both the Lady Techsters and the Bulldogs return the Conference Outdoor Performer of the Year from last season as Lewis-Baker won the 2008 WAC outdoor freshman of the year award and Performer of the Year Award for the women and Albert Fullwood won the WAC Men's Outdoor POY Award.
"All the coaches are excited to finally get this going tomorrow and I can tell the kids are really excited so hopefully we are ready to compete hard for another conference championship," said Stanley.
The conference Championship officially kicked off Wednesday as the events for the decathlon and heptathlon began, but because there are no Louisiana Tech athletes competing in those events, Tech will not begin competition until 3 p.m. CT Friday.
