Tech Track has Four Finish in Top 25 in the Nation
June 11, 2009
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.--After a number of solid performances Thursday at the NCAA National Championship Meet the Lady Techster track and field team guaranteed themselves four top 25 finishers in the United States and five in the top 30.
"We're very proud of all our athletes today," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "These are the best of the best out here that we are competing against and we for sure have five in the top 30 in the entire country and that is a big accomplishment."
Leading the way for the Techsters was senior thrower Nadia Alexander who finishes her Tech career with a tenth place finish in the Nation with a throw of 52' 6".
Late Thursday night the women's 4X400 relay team of El Charrita Reynolds, Kamelia Stroy, Monique Wright and Lashannda Worthy added to Alexander's top 10 finish by finishing ninth in the prelims with a season best time of 3:34.43 seconds. The ninth place finish not only advances the team to the finals which will be run on Saturday, but also guarantees the team a top ten finish in the nation and a possible All-American honor.
"The important thing to remember is that this is the National Championship," said Stanley. "So going into the finals on Saturday we have the ninth best 4X400 relay team in the United States and five athletes in the top 30 in the Country in their respected events. That's a huge deal."
Chipping in with two top 25 performances were junior Antoinette Cobb and Wright. Cobb finished 19th in the U.S. in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.74 seconds. Wright's 400m time of 55.03 seconds earned her a 25th place finish in the nation.
Stroy added a top 30 performance finishing 27th in the 400m with a time of 55.13 seconds.
"We are all extremely pleased with the team's performance today," said Stanley. "To come out on such a big stage and such a stressed packed situation and perform how we did is a big feat and we are very proud of everyone."
Tech fans can catch the 4X400 team on television Saturday June 13 as the last day of the National Championship will be airing on CBS Sports beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
