HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Louisiana Tech shot a season low 26 percent from the field as the Lady Techsters saw its seven-game winning streak snapped, falling 65-50 to Southern Miss Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss (9-7, 1-2 C-USA) used an 18-0 run spanning from the end of the first quarter through the beginning of the second quarter to build a 15-point lead and Louisiana Tech (11-5, 2-1 C-USA) could never recover.
Junior Taylor Stahly scored a career-high 21 points and Nikki McDonald tied her season high with 14 points, but the Techsters simply couldn't find the bottom of the net, hitting only 14-of-53 field goals in the loss.
Southern Miss got 19 points from Jayla King and 17 from Shonte Hailes, and the Golden Eagles outrebounded Louisiana Tech 41-31 and outscored the Lady Techsters by 18 points in the paint.
It marked the second straight season that Louisiana Tech saw a seven-game winning streak snapped by Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum.
Tech took an early 9-6 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Stahly, but then Southern Miss used an 18-0 run to take a 24-9 lead. By the time Stahly hit her third three-pointer of the game, the Lady Techsters were down double digits.
Southern Miss led 40-27 at the break.
Tech came out in the third quarter and played stellar defense, holding USM to only two field goals made. A Zhanae Whitney conventional three-point play with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter closed the gap to 44-39. However, USM scored the final six points of the third quarter to take a 50-39 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Any chance of a fourth quarter comeback was doused by poor shooting. Tech hit just 2-of-13 from the field in the final 10 minutes of action.
The Lady Techsters return to action Saturday at noon when they face Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia.
