Techsters Travel to UT Arlington
Feb. 1, 2013
ARLINGTON - Louisiana Tech will begin the second half of the Western Athletic Conference season on the road Saturday when the Lady Techsters face UT Arlington at 6 p.m. at the College Park Center.
LA Tech (9-11, 5-4) is currently in fifth place in the WAC standings, but only two games behind league leaders Utah State and Seattle. The Lady Techsters endured some heart-breaking losses to WAC teams in the first nine games, dropping a pair of one-point decisions on last second shots to UTSA and Utah State. A third loss came at New Mexico State by only four points.
The only game that the Lady Techsters weren't competitive in during the first half of the WAC season was in a 64-47 loss at Seattle on Jan. 19.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon's team enters Saturday's game against the Mavericks trying to snap a two-game skid after falling at UALR Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.
Kelia Shelton (12.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Brittany Lewis (11.5 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Whitney Frazier (10.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg) are all averaging double figures while freshman Lulu Perry (9.1 ppg) has been Tech's most consistent offensive player recently, averaging 17.0 ppg over her last three contests.
UT Arlington has dropped eight straight games since defeating New Mexico State in its WAC opener back on Dec. 29. The Mavericks, which have lost four of their league games by single digits, are looking for their first home win of the year (0-8).
Laila Suleiman leads UT Arlington offensively, averaging 9.1 points per game as the Mavericks have utilized 17 different players this season. As a team, UT Arlington is averaging 56.7 points per game and shooting only 35 percent from the field. Defensively, the Mavericks are allowing 72.8 points per game.
Tech defeated the Mavericks 65-58 in the first meeting this year on Jan. 5 in Ruston. The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series 10-0.
