Techsters Face Texas State in Saturday Showdown

Feb. 8, 2013

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Louisiana Tech will look to record its longest winning streak of the season Saturday when the Lady Techsters face Texas State at 2 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.

LA Tech (11-11, 7-4 WAC) has won two straight games following its 78-62 win over UT Arlington on Feb. 2 and its 79-73 victory against UTSA Thursday night. Texas State (8-14, 2-10) has dropped two in a row and five of its last six after falling 73-72 to UT Arlington on a last second shot in overtime Thursday night.

"When you talk about losing a game on a last second shot, that just fuels their fire," said Tech head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. "You become hungry. You want to get back out on the floor to redeem yourself. We have to be ready stepping onto their home floor. We have to come into the game with a better mentality from all 13 players. We can't rely on just one or two players, it has to be all 13."

Tech, which won the first meeting between the two teams 71-58 in Ruston on Jan. 10, has yet to record a three-game winning streak this season but has an opportunity to do so with a win against the Bobcats.

The Lady Techsters will look to ride the hot hands of guards Kelia Shelton (14.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and Lulu Perry (10.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg) who combined to score 64 points in the win over UTSA. Shelton's 45-point performance not only broke a 22-year-old WAC single game scoring record, but it is the most points scored by a Division I player this season.

After struggling offensively in the non-conference portion of the schedule, Tech has improved during league play, averaging 70.5 points per game while shooting 41 percent from the field and 36 percent from the three-point line.

In WAC-only games, Tech has four players averaging double figures led by Shelton (16.7 ppg, 17-35 from three-point line), Whitney Frazier (11.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg), Brittany Lewis (11.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Perry (11.3 ppg, 28-33 FTs).

Texas State is led by the WAC's leading scorer in guard Diamond Ford, who is averaging 21.4 points per game this year. Prior to Shelton's offensive explosion against UTSA, Ford had recorded the WAC's top offensive game this year with a 40-point effort in a loss at San Jose State.

The Bobcats have been without the services of forward Ashley Ezeh (16.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg), who hasn't played since the LA Tech game back on Jan. 10. Erin Peoples (9.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Jasmine Baugus (9.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg) have picked up some of the slack in Ezeh's absence.

Since falling to San Jose State 98-96 in its WAC opener on Dec. 29, the Bobcats have failed to score 70 or more points in regulation their last 11 contests. Texas State lost 73-72 to overtime to UT Arlington Thursday night on a last second shot by the Mavericks.

Tech leads the all-time series against Texas State 2-0.
