RUSTON – Louisiana Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr announced Thursday that Collin Country Junior College forward Zhanae Whitney has signed a national letter of intent to join the Lady Techster basketball program this fall.
Whitney is a 6-foot forward that lettered the past two years for coach John Allen helping lead Collin County to back-to-back North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference championships.
“We are excited to welcome Zhanae to the Louisiana Tech family,” said Stoehr. “She has a very high motor and plays with consistent energy on both ends of the floor. Zhanae has played in successful high school and junior college programs and has continued to develop under Coach Allen at Collin and Coach (Dianna) Sager at Colleyville Heritage.”
After earning honorable mention all-conference honors as a freshman at Collin County, Whitney earned first team all-league honors and first team all-Region V accolades this past year. She averaged 8.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 46 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. She leaves Collin County as the all-time leader in rebounds and games played.
“On the court, she reminds me of a Dennis rodman-type player (as far as her effort and strengths),” said Allen. “She plays hard, she rebounds. She is just has blue collar, go-to-work mentality and is a great teammate. She is a very good student. She is a personable, out-going young lady. She is just a great kid.”
Whitney prepped for coach Dianna Sager at Colleyville Heritage High School in Texas during her final two years of high school. She was named the District 7-6A MVP and Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and played in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star game. She played her first two years at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens, New York.
“When they first called me, they just had a lot of enthusiasm and really wanted me to be there,” said Whitney. “On my visit, I knew I wanted to be there for the next two years. Their values -- family, passion, service, accountability – I feel like I can contribute to everything they want from me.”
Whitney will have two years of eligibility remaining at Louisiana Tech.
