Women's Basketball Signs Post Player
June 25, 2013
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech head coach Teresa Weatherspoon announced Tuesday that the Lady Techsters have signed junior college post player TyJae' Chenevert to scholarship papers.
The 6-foot-3-inch post player comes to Ruston after playing her sophomore season at Diablo Valley Junior College in California and her freshman year at State Fair Community College in Missouri.
"Tyjae' is a skilled post player in the paint," Weatherspoon said. "She has great footwork and many offensive moves. She is very smart and physical. Tyjae' is good offensively and defensively. She has been coached. We like the work ethic she brings to the program. She is a leader. She is unselfish and will do whatever it takes to be successful."
"It was important for us to get bigger," Weatherspoon said. "We needed someone who demands the ball in the paint. We needed to get a productive big that can score. She is an experienced and intelligent post player who will really help us this year."
Chenevert led Diablo Valley to an 18-11 record this past year and a 9-5 mark in the Big 8 Conference of the California Community College Athletics Association. While seeing action in 27 games and making 18 starts, she averaged 6.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.
The Richmond, California native is ranked as the 36th best overall player in the junior college ranks by Dan Olsen's Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, the 7th best at her position.
Chenevert chose LA Tech over a number of other Division I programs.
"I felt really comfortable (on my visit) with the team and the coaching staff," Chenevert said. "I felt like LA Tech is where I need to be to play my last two years. I want to go to the next level, and I felt coach Weatherspoon and coach Mike (Ekanem) can help me get stronger and more dominant. I want to help lead the program on to the next level."
Chenevert will join a Techster signing class that already includes JaQuan Jackson, Kevion Moten, Christassia Walter and Brandi Wingate.
