Ford, Weatherspoon Make WNBA All-Star Team
RUSTON - Former Louisiana Tech Lady Techster Cheryl Ford is among the 12 players selected as reserves in the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game scheduled for July 12.
Another former Lady Techsters, New York Liberty guard Teresa Weatherspoon, will be among the starters for the Eastern Team after being voted in by the fan balloting.
Ford, the lone rookie to make the prestigious squad, is one of only three WNBA players averaging a double double as the Detroit Shock forward is averaging 10.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per contest.
The leading candidate for WNBA Rookie of the Year Award ranks in the top 5 in the WNBA in seven statistical categories, while recording five double doubles thus far this season.
Ford, who has helped Detroit post a 9-2 mark, equaling the total number of victories from last year, joins teammates Swin Cash and Deana Nolan on the All-Star Eastern Team.
Weatherspoon, who is averaging 2.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game for the Liberty, will participate in her fifth all-star game having been a starter in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. One of the WNBA fan favorites, Weatherspoon has helped lead New York to a 7-5 record and second place in the current WNBA Eastern Conference standings.
The contest will be televised nationally by ABC beginning at 3 p.m. CST with ESPN2 hosting a half-hour pregame show beginning at 2:30 p.m.
