RUSTON - During her playing days at Louisiana Tech, Cheryl Ford developed a reputation as a fierce competitor on the hardwood as she earned All-American honors on her way to an all-star career in the WNBA.
The legendary Lady Techster forward will be returning to Ruston July 20 and 21 as the Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana will host Cheryl Ford: Books and Basketball Weekend.
Ford was the two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year at Louisiana Tech where she guided the Lady Techsters to four straight conference titles and four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. She was the No. 3 overall selection of the 2003 WNBA Draft and became the first player to ever win the WNBA Rookie of the Year award and the WNBA title in the same season.
In 2007, Cheryl was nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award as Favorite Female Athlete. On July 15, 2007, Ford won the WNBA All-Star Game MVP Award in Washington, D.C. when the East beat the West 103-99. She was a four-time WNBA All-Star and a two-time WNBA rebounding champion.
Ford will be at the Boys and Girls Club in Ruston at 300 Memorial Drive Friday (July 20) as the day begins with Readers Create Leaders from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Later that day, she will be on hand for a meet-n-greet and cookout from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the club.
The following day (Saturday, July 21), Ford will be at the Louisiana Tech Intramural Center for the Team Ford Junior and Senior Basketball Clinics. From 8 to 11 a.m., Ford will conduct the junior clinic for boys and girls ages 8 to 11 years old while the s senior clinic will follow from 1 to 5 p.m. for ages 12 to 18 years old.
