SPRINGFIELD, Missouri - After two straight disappointing losses, Louisiana Tech will travel to Missouri State Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against the Bears, who are the preseason favorites to win the Missouri Valley Conference.
Tech (2-2) has dropped back-to-back four-point decisions against UALR and Houston in games where the Lady Techsters were either tied or leading in the final three minutes of the games. In its 70-66 setback against UH Tuesday night in Ruston, Tech led by 16 in the second half before scoring only 12 points in the final 14 minutes of the game.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon's team opens the season playing seven straight games against postseason teams from a year ago, including Missouri State who won 22 contests last season and return the nucleus of that team including the Missouri Valley Conference preseason player of the year in Casey Garrison.
Garrison ranks among the nation's leading scorers through the first few weeks of this season, averaging 28.3 points per game. The 6-foot-0 guard is shooting 48 percent from the field, 82 percent (9-11) from the three-point line and 92 percent (22-24) from the free throw line. She has already eclipsed the 30-point plateau in two of the Bears three games.
Missouri State (2-1) has posted wins over Lamar and Toledo while dropping a home game against DePaul.
The Lady Techsters are led by Adrienne Johnson as the 6-foot-1-inch forward is averaging 25.0 points per game. Johnson became the first LA Tech player in the history of the program to ever start the season with four straight 20-plus point performances, including her 26-point effort in the loss to Houston.
Through four games, Tech is shooting 41 percent from the field, 41 percent from the three-point line and 76 percent from the free throw line. However, turnovers have cost the Lady Techsters their last two games as the team has committed 41 in those losses.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on ESPN 97.7 FM with the pregame show beginning at 1:30 p.m.
