Techsters Host Southern Thursday Night
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech will play its third game in six days when the 12th-ranked Lady Techsters host Southern Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech (4-1) defeated UALR 81-58 Tuesday night and fell to No. 2 ranked Tennessee 85-65 Sunday afternoon as the Lady Techsters are currently in a stretch where they play four games in eight days.
"There is no doubt in my mind we were a tired basketball team Tuesday night," said Tech head coach Kurt Budke, who gave his squad Wednesday off to try to recover. "Arkansas-Little Rock did some good things, but we didn't help ourselves any. I expect us to come out with a lot more energy and focus against Southern."
Through its first five games, Tech has used a balanced scoring attack as it currently boasts five players averaging double figures, led by forwards Amisha Carter (16.6 ppg) and Trina Frierson (15.0 ppg).
The Lady Techsters have also been hurting their opponents defensively as Tech ranks No. 5 in the nation in steals per game at 14.8. Five Louisiana Tech players rank in the top six in the Western Athletic Conference in steals per game, led by Erica Smith-Taylor's 2.8 steals per contest.
Southern enters the game with a 1-3 mark on the season, although the Jaguars are coming off a 90-60 win over Tougaloo Dec. 4. Head coach Sandy Pugh's squad has been led by sophomore guard Ashley Blake, who is averaging 11.3 points and ranks NO. 6 in the country in rebounds per game at 12.3.
Sophomore guard Rolanda Monroe, who prepped at nearby Arcadia High School, leads the team in scoring at 18.0 points per game while senior forward Shere' Cunningham is averaging 17.8 points per contest.
