RUSTON - Louisiana Tech returns home Wednesday night as the Lady Techsters host McNeese State at 7 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center as Santa Claus will be in the house for the event.
The Lady Techsters are coming off a pair of tough road losses at Texas A&M and Rutgers as head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. will look to get back into the win column against a McNeese State team that is coming off of back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearancs.
"We have to do a good job defensively against them," Weatherspoon said. "The (Baggett) twins and their little sister are tough guards to defend. We have to prevent penetration and we have to guard the perimeter. This is a talented, experienced team we are playing and it will be another challenge for us.
"Offensively, we have to take care of the basketball and knock down shots. Our kids need to continue to believe in themselves and continue to work hard. Good things will happen. We've struggled early in the season, but we are continuing to work hard. We haven't lost confidence as coaches and our kids haven't lost confidence either."
Tech (2-5), which is shooting under 21 percent from the field in the last two games and 36 percent this season, continues to rely upon its one senior in forward Brittany Lewis, who is averaging 12.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. Lewis led Tech with 16 points and nine boards in Sunday's loss to Rutgers.
Despite its offensive struggles this year, Tech has received scoring from a plethora of players as six different Techsters have led the team in scoring through seven games. Guards Kelia Shelton (10.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg), Lulu Perry (8.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg) and Whitney Frazier (7.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg) are all capable of scoring in double figures on a nightly basis.
Head coach Brooks Donald Williams team suffered losses to then-top 25 ranked Vanderbilt, Southern Miss (in overtime) and Rice as the team is 0-3 in true road games this year.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. as Jolly Old Saint Nick will be in the concourse of the arena to take pictures with youngsters prior to the contest. At halftime, Santa will read "The Night Before Christmas" to the crowd.
Fans are also asked to bring new or gently used toys for the Toys for Tots program as anyone donated a child's toy will receive a free raffle ticket and will enter a drawing to win a Teresa Weatherspoon jersey t-shirt autographed by the entire team.
The first 200 LA Tech students will also receive free pizza.
Tech leads the all-time series against McNese State 15-7, including a win in the last meeting between the two programs.
