RUSTON - Fresh off a hard-fought win over McNeese State on Wednesday night, Louisiana Tech returns to action Friday when the Lady Techsters host Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech (3-5) overcame a late deficit and a plethora of turnovers to defeat McNeese State 52-50 as the Lady Techsters held the Cowgirls without a field goal over the final six minutes of play.
Kelia Shelton leads Tech in scoring at 13.2 points per game after her career-high 23-point performance in the win over McNeese State. Brittany Lewis is also averaging in double figures at 11.5 points per game and leads the Techsters in rebounding at 7.3 boards a contest.
As a team, Tech is shooting just 35 percent from the field and 22 percent from the three-point line while averaging 52.2 points a contest.
"We need more balance offensively (then we had last night)," said Tech head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, whose team is averaging just over 52 points per contest. "We can't expect one player to carry us like Kelia did (against McNeese State). We need more out of everybody. We are going to have to score more than 52 points to beat Oral Roberts."
Defensively, LA Tech held McNeese State to only 27 percent shooting and outrebounded the Cowgirls by eight -- a vast improvement over the previous two games in losses to Texas A&M and Rutgers.
ORU (3-4) enters the contest after falling at Baylor Wednesday night by a score of 94-56. The Golden Eagles are led by one of the nation's top scorers in senior guard Kevi Luper, who brings a 22.6 point per game scoring average into the contest. Luper scored a season-high 40 points in a 73-72 overtime loss to Missouri State on Nov. 29 and is shooting 48 percent from the field, 9-of-23 from the three-point line and 93 percent from the free throw line.
As a team, the Golden Eagles are shooting 43 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three-point line and 68 percent from the charity stripe.
Tech leads the all-time series against Oral Roberts 6-1 although the Golden Eagles defeated the Lady Techsters 92-71 in Tulsa last year.
As part of the promotions surrounding Friday night's game, the first 200 Tech students will receive free pizza. It will also be Autograph Night at the Thomas Assembly Center as fans can receive a free team poster as the Lady Techster players will remain on the court following the game to sign autographs.
Fans are also encouraged to bring a new or gently used toy to the game for the Toys and Tots program. Anyone donating a toy will receive a free raffle ticket and will be eligible to win an autographed Teresa Weatherspoon jersey t-shirt.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network with the pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fans can also access the live video and audio by purchasing a subscription to LA Tech All-Access at www.LATechSports.com.
