Legends Days Set for LA Tech Basketball Programs

Dec. 14, 2017

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech will be recognizing two very special teams on back-to-back days in January as the Athletic Department is holding Legend’s Days for both the Lady Techsters and the Bulldogs basketball programs.

On Saturday, Jan. 27 the Bulldogs will host Southern Miss at 6 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center for its Legends Day, celebrating the 30th-year anniversary of the 1987-88 team.

Members of the 1987-88 Bulldog Basketball team included Michale Ames, Eldon Bowman, Dickie Crawford, Brett Guillory, Darryl Knight, Kelvin Lewis, Kennedy Louis, Robert McAlister, Byron Newton, Vernon Norris, Kevin Tatum and Randy White. All former players, coaches and support staff are invited back to celebrate that team and its accomplishments.

Coached by LA Tech Hall of Famer Tommy Joe Eagles, the Bulldogs posted a 22-9 record. They were Co-Champions of the American South Conference, the first year of the newly formed league. LA Tech defeated Arkansas State and New Orleans to also claim the ASC Tournament Championship and represented the league in the National Invitation Tournament.

On Sunday, Jan. 28 the Lady Techsters will host WKU at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center for its Legends Day, celebrating members of the 2001-02 Lady Techster team.

Members of that team included Ashley Antony, Kenya Bibbs, Kenzi Bond, Cheryl Ford, Trina Frierson, Brooke Lassiter, Ovlina Lewis, Takeisha Lewis, Amber Obaze, Essence Perry, Erica Smith and Ayana Walker. The team was coaches by Leon Barmore, Kurt Budke, Chris Long and Stacy Johnson.

That team – Leon Barmore’s last at Louisiana Tech – recorded a 25-5 record, won the regular season and tournament titles in the Western Athletic Conference with a perfect 18-0 league record and earned an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Any former players, coaches or support staff from any year of the Bulldog or Lady Techster programs should RSVP for the respective weekends by calling Solomon Randle at (318) 497-7986 or email Solomon@latechalumni.org.
