Lady Techters Play Well to Move Up Two Spots at the Mid-Winter Classic

Jan. 14, 2012

RUSTON - The Lady Techsters (26-23) moved up two spots to end day two in seventh place at the Mid-Winter Classic, highlighted by an upset win over sixth-ranked Central Missouri Saturday afternoon.

Louisiana Tech went into the five person team games in ninth place with a 3-2 record. Tech won three games on Saturday to place seventh with a 6-4 record going into the final day in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

LA Tech defeated Southern University in the opening match 910-810. Junior Kayla Ghersini led Tech with a 196 pinfall in match one.

Tech's biggest win came in match two when they upset nationally-ranked Central Missouri 995-976 behind Nicole Wilson's career-high 243 pinfall.

The Lady Techsters had a lead in match three against eighth-ranked Arkansas St. but fell in the last frame 1031-1015. Arkansas St. is currently in first place with a 9-1 record.

Tech defeated UAB 970-870 in match four and went into match five with an opportunity to move up to sixth in the standings with a win. However, their worst performance came in match five as they lost to Alabama A&M 845-817.

Coach Shawn Jackson was happy with the way the girls played and hopes to build on today's success.

"We played great up until the final match. We defeated nationally-ranked teams and two quality teams in Southern and UAB," said Jackson. "We played Arkansas St. well up until the final frame and only lost by 16, but I am excited to see how the girls perform tomorrow."

Senior Houston Granger led all Tech players with an average pinfall of 203.5 and placed 10th among all bowlers in the tournament.

The tournament will conclude Sunday when teams played a best -of-seven. Action will begin at 9:30 a.m.
