Lady Techsters Finish Fourth in Rattler Invitational

Jan. 30, 2017

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech women’s bowling was back on the road this weekend and took home a fourth place finish at the Rattler Invitational hosted by Florida A&M University.

“Even though we did not finish the way that we had planned this weekend, I think we made some strides in quality shot-making this tournament,” head coach Matt Nantais said. “There were some great shots made at times we needed them and did not get the breaks that we deserved. You can throw the best shot of the tournament and still not strike. Our downfall is still spare shooting. I have stressed over-and-over again to the team, that is the way to win matches, but the confidence level and spare shooting is not where it needs to be. Over the next two weeks, before our match at Stephen F. Austin, we will shoot spares for 90% of the time we are at practice, so watch for us to come out and have a better showing at the next tournament. Overall, we are getting better and I am happy with our progress.”

The Lady Techsters entered Sunday’s tournament as the third seed after posting a 6-4 record during the first two days of the tournament. As the three-seed, they squared off with Bethune-Cookman in the first round.

It took just five games for LA Tech to advance to the semi-final round, winning the first three games by scores of 189-148, 217-157 and 166-152. The Techsters dropped a nail-biter in the fourth game, 186-184, before finishing off the match with a 182-181 win in the fifth game.

In the semi-finals, LA Tech matched up with Alabama State and dropped a heartbreaker, 154-155 in the first game of the match. Louisiana Tech would rally to take the next two games 220-161 and 197-185. Unfortunately, Alabama State would rally and win the next three games to win the match by scores of 190-200, 188-195 and 167-235.

Louisiana Tech would fall 3-0-2 to Spring Hill College in the third place match.

Two Lady Techsters finished in the top-10 in average scoring, led by Kelsey Calzaretta, who finished ninth with an average score of 189.6. She was followed closely by teammate Shelby Smith, who average 188 per game. Just outside the top 10 was Sarah McComic who finished 12th with a score 186.2.
