Lady Techsters Conclude Season at Southland Conference Championships

March 25, 2017

JONESBORO, Ark. - Louisiana Tech concluded the 2017 season on Friday afternoon at the Southland Conference Championships in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

It was not the outcome the Lady Techsters had hoped for, but led by first-year head coach Matt Nantais, LA Tech will have a lot of build on as they turn their sights towards the offseason and the 2017-18 season.

Louisiana Tech opened play on Friday afternoon going up against the number two team in the nation in Arkansas State. The young Lady Techster squad battled but ultimately came up short in the first traditional game, falling 1,014-832, before dropping the match in a 948-780 defeat in the baker total pinfall series.

With the loss, the Lady Techsters dropped to the elimination bracket where they matched up with Stephen F. Austin who is ranked no. 7 in the nation. In the first game of the match, the traditional game, Louisiana Tech led for the majority of the match, but the Lady ‘Jacks rallied in the final frame to down the Techsters 947-898. In the baker total pinfall series, SFA advanced to the next round with a 953-897 win.

“At the Southland bowling league conference championships this weekend we had an unfortunate first round exit,” head coach Matt Nantais said. “We went into the bracket seeded eighth and had to bowl, in my opinion, the number one team in the nation, Arkansas State. We lost the first team game to them and then had to bowl a Baker game the next match. We started out leading after two games then ended up falling to them in total pins. The second round we faced Stephen F Austin and had the lead most of the first game and lost it in the final two frames. That game we had the third highest team game out of all teams at the tournament. Then next match was our baker game and we started a little slow as we tried to find the best line on the lanes. We finished the match strong, but it was not enough.”

A young Louisiana Tech team was led by the lone senior Shelby Smith who averaged 17.85 pins a frame. Sarah McComic averaged 17.64 pins per frame and was joined around the 17-mark by Kelsey Calzaretta who averaged 17.05.

“I am very happy with the progress the team made this year,” Nantais concluded. “We are going to miss having Shelby Smith next year. She did a great job this year leading the team.”
