NEW ORLEANS, La. - In its first tournament of the season, the Louisiana Tech women's bowling team placed sixth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational and recorded four individual top 50 finishes this past weekend at the AMF All Star Lanes in New Orleans.
The three-day invitational, which was hosted by the Tulane Green Wave, featured four nationally ranked teams and a total of 11 participants.
Head coach Jerry Miles and the Lady Techsters posted an overall record of 4-5 over the course of the weekend with a total score of 7,967. LA Tech placed above Jackson State, Tulane and Florida A&M in the final standings.
After finishing Friday's event 1-4 and in 11th place, Louisiana Tech fought back Saturday with a record of 3-1 to move up in the overall standings.
Individually, freshman Shelby Smith led all Techsters with a 24th place finish out of more than 80 bowlers with a pin total of 969 and an average of 193.8 in five games.
Kay Rawls (36th place), Jessica McAda (41st place) and Nicole Wilson (46th place) all finished inside the top 50 bowlers, while Harley Dekyser was just outside the top 50 with a 54th place finish with an average of 171.2 in five games.
Louisiana Tech returns to the lanes in two weeks as the Lady Techsters will travel Nov. 1-3 to the Texas Southern Open in Houston, Texas to compete.
