LA Tech Finishes Third at Hornet Classic

Nov. 21, 2016

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech registered a third place finish, while two Lady Techsters took home individual honors at the Hornet Classic hosted by Alabama State this past weekend.

LA Tech senior Shelby Smith garnered the Most Valuable Player award, averaging over 206 pins as an individual bowler, while junior Kelsey Calzaretta was also named to the all-tournament team with her average of 200 pins a game.

The Lady Techsters posted an 8-2 record through the first two days of the tournament and led all teams by over 200, putting themselves in prime position to win the tournament on Sunday.

Facing host Alabama State in the opening game over the tournament, LA Tech was unable to get in a rhythm early as the Hornets post two 200-plus pin games. Following the loss, LA Tech then fell to tournament-champion Texas State, which moved the Lady Techsters to a third place game.

The third place game pitting Louisiana Tech against Southern and the seven-game match saw LA Tech come away with a victory in the final game 161-142.

“We led the tournament by over 200 pins, but in bracket play, all of that gets wiped away,” head coach Matt Nantais said. “You have to win twice to win the championship. We came out flat pretty much all day. This weekend we showed signs of improvement, which I am very happy with. It was nice to take third place and have two players make the all-tournament team, with one being the MVP. This is the second consecutive weekend Shelby has made an all-tournament team and this was Kelsey’s first time. After the break we will get back to work and prepare for Tulane. Even though we had a third place finish, I thought this was our best performance by far.”

Following a thanksgiving break, Louisiana Tech will be back in action on December 12, when the Lady Techsters travel to New Orleans to compete in the Tulane Invitational.
