Lady Techsters Finish 9th at Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational

Dec. 4, 2016

NEW ORLEANS, La. - On Sunday afternoon, after a weekend of competition, the Louisiana Tech Bowling program registered at 9th place finish at the All State Sugar Bowl Invitational hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“We had some ups and downs this weekend,” head coach Matt Nantais said. “Unfortunately, we were not able to win any of the close matches that we had. We lost six matches that were within 20-30 pins, which is a couple of spares. Hopefully, when we get back we can get some things fixed before the team comes back for the second half of the season. We definitely need to work on some spare shooting, because that was our demise this weekend.”

The Lady Techsters entered the bracket style tournament on Sunday as an eighth seed, having posted a 5-8 record through the first two days of the tournament.

“On Saturday, I thought, overall, that we had a pretty good day,” Nantais continued. “The girls performed well and I thought we had a couple of season-high games that we had not had. Morgan Hall came in and gave the team a lift. A freshman, she averaged 215 for the four games, which was a big boost. Sarah [McComic] averaged 193 and Kelsey [Calzaretta] was not far behind. I thought we had a pretty good performance. We just have to figure out how to come out and win the games on Sundays that we are supposed to win to move up in the standings. Overall, I am pretty happy with the progress we have been making as a team, for this first half.”

LA Tech opened play on Sunday facing off with a powerful UAB squad who posted four 200-pin games, propelling the Blazers to a 4-1-1 victory over the Techsters. Of the six games played, one ended in a tie, while another saw Tech fall by a mere two pins.

Following the loss to UAB, LA Tech dropped another close one to Texas Southern in seven games. It was a similar story to UAB as in a winner-take-all game seven, the Lady Techsters saw Texas Southern advance with a two pin victory, 186-184.

The Lady Techsters were able to end the weekend on a positive note, taking down Southern 4-2-1 in the finale of the invitational which handed Louisiana Tech a ninth place finish.

Louisiana Tech was led by Morgan Hall who finished ninth individually with her average of just over 215 pins a game.
