JACKSON, Miss. – With a star-studded field featuring defending national champion and top-ranked Vanderbilt and No. 2 Nebraska, the Lady Techster bowling team got some of its best individual and team performances of the season to grab a fifth-place finish at the Capital City Classic over the weekend. “It was a good tournament for us,” Tech coach Shawn Jackson said. “There’s no do-overs, but if we’d played that way in Houston last week, we would have easily won that tournament.” Freshman Morgan Thompson, who struggled at the Texas Southern tournament, was the team MVP of the weekend with a 197 average, including a career-high game of 234 in the opening game against national power Nebraska, the best single game by a Lady Techster this season. “Morgan came out and bowled very well for us,” Jackson said. “But I told her that her best game was actually her lowest score (161 against Jackson State). She was open in three of the first four frames, but she didn’t get down on herself and recovered to bowl a decent game. I was very proud of the way she handled some early adversity.” Senior Lakeya Smith was also solid for the weekend with a 195 average and a high game of 203. Sophomore Stephanie Hinz averaged 186.3 with a high game of 200, and junior Toria Miles bowled a 203 against Jackson State and averaged 181.3 for the tournament. Tech lost all four team matches against very stiff competition on the opening day, but bowled its best three games so far this season against Nebraska (934), Jackson State (950) and Grambling State (913). Defending national champion Vanderbilt took down Tech in the fourth game. “We shot higher in every game than we did in any game last week,” Jackson said. “But Nebraska shot a 1,049 and Jackson State came up with an 1,100. That JSU game was the absolute best that any team has ever bowled against us since we started this program. They might have had four or five open frames the entire game.” Tech picked up three wins in Baker Total Pins format on Sunday, downing Grambling State, Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, and finished fifth in total pinfall with 7,833. Second-ranked Nebraska took the team title with a total pinfall of 9,060, outpacing No. 1 Vanderbilt (8,997), No. 9 Arkansas State (8,779) and No. 15 Jackson State (8,528). With the tournament at Arkansas-Pine Bluff having been rescheduled, the Lady Techsters will have more than a month off before hitting the lanes again. Tech’s next tournament is set for Jan. 11-13 as the team travels to Baton Rouge for the Southern Varsity Classic.
