Tech Aims for Fourth Title in Five Years

Feb. 26, 2009

NAMPA, Idaho -- Louisiana Tech's women's track and field squad will try to capture its fourth championships in four years this weekend at the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho.

The women captured their third indoor crown in four years in dramatic fashion as they edged out Hawaii by one point.

The Lady Techsters return a solid core of athletes as last year's WAC Championship team boasted only one senior.

The men's team finished last year's indoor season with a fourth place finish in the conference championships and returns a strong nucleus of athletes as well. Michael Coleman, 2006 WAC outdoor freshman of the year and 2007 WAC outdoor performer of the year, returns for his senior season along with junior Albert Fullwood, 2007 WAC outdoor freshman of the year and 2008 WAC outdoor performer of the year.

"We're real excited for the conference championships to finally be here," head coach Gary Stanley. "We feel like we're ready to compete, the kids have been working extremely hard and hopefully that will turn into some good results this weekend."

Tech, as a whole, leads six of the categories on the conference list and holds a runner up position in eight categories in the conference. The conference leaders include Michael Coleman in the 200, Chasidee Lewis-Baker in the women's 60, Kamelia Stroy in the 400 and both the men's and women's 4x400 and the men's distance medley relay.

Louisiana Tech will begin competition Friday afternoon. The WAC Championships are set to conclude Saturday night.
