RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech's Antoinette Cobb and Nadia Alexander have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week while Tech's Larry Jones was named Men's Outdoor Conference Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, for April 20-26.
Cobb, a junior from Weyanoke, La. (West Feliciana HS), finished fourth in the 100m hurdles at the Drake Relays with a regional qualifying time of 13.64 seconds. Her time of 13.63 seconds is currently best in the WAC. The announcement marks the first time this season Cobb has been named WAC Athlete of the Week. She was also named Conference Indoor Athlete of the Week during the indoor season.
Alexander, a senior from Kingston, Jamaica (St. Hugh's HS), won the shot put at the Penn Relays with a regional qualifying throw of 54' 8.75" which is tops in the conference. The throw also set a new school record in the shot put at LA Tech. Alexander held the previous record at 54' 6.75". It is the first time this year she has been awarded the WAC weekly honor.
Jones, a sophomore from Ruston, La. (Ruston HS), finished fifth in the discus at the Penn Relays on Saturday with a NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 180-10 (54.86m). His mark of 185-4 earlier in the season currently stands as the best in the conference. This marks the second time this season Jones has been awarded Athlete of the Week honors.
The Louisiana Tech Track and Field team will continue their successful 2009 outdoor campaign this weekend as they will travel to Arlington, Texas to compete in the University of Texas-Arlington Open.
