Louisiana Tech Finishes Well in Final Day of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa -- After a good first day performance, the Louisiana Tech track and field team weathered the rain and finished a good weekend at the Drake Relays.

“It rained all day today,” Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. “Even so, the meet stayed on schedule. It’s a shame the weather was bad. It’s a testimony to this city’s passion for this meet. Thousands sat through a downpour for hours. It’s just amazing.”

Senior Donesha Spivey capped off a good preliminaries run in the women’s 100-meter dash from Friday and finished fourth in the finals Saturday with a time of 12.02 seconds.

Sophomore Sheldon Williams took a fifth place finish in the finals of the men’s 800 with a time of 1:51.92.

After a hurl of 164-01, senior Jason Morgan took ninth place in the discus.

The highlight of the weekend came Friday when the women’s 4x200 team finished first place with a time of 1:34.79.

“That was incredible,” Stanley said. “Having the winning team at a prestigious event like Drake is huge for our program.

Stanley said he was proud of the way his athletes performed today, even through the wet weather.

“I thought the kids gave really solid efforts,” Stanley said. “They did well fighting the elements.”

The Louisiana Tech track and field team will be traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii, May 11 for the 2006 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
