Dages Delivers Late Goal in LA Tech Victory
Aug. 18, 2017
LAKE CHARLES, La. – With the season-opening match looking as though it was headed towards overtime, the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team got a late goal from sophomore Jenna Dages via a corner kick to give the Lady Techsters a 1-0 shutout victory over McNeese State on Friday night at Cowgirl Field.
A perfectly placed corner by freshman Gabrielle Parent in the 84th minute went into the six-yard box and the sophomore Dages managed to get a header on the ball for the goal.
McNeese State (0-1) was not able to get off another shot attempt, giving LA Tech (1-0) its third straight season-opening win and its first ever victory in Lake Charles (was previously 0-3).
“It was a very tough, physical encounter on an extremely heavy field because of the recent rain,” head coach Kevin Sherry said. “It ended up being a game of two halves. In the first half, both teams had chances, but McNeese had the better opportunities with their tactic of crossing early to the far post and pressing us high causing turnovers in the midfield.
“We changed things up in the second half and played a bit more direct, bypassing midfield. It is not our usual style, but we had to adapt to the conditions and to our opponent. It worked. Our goal was more protected and we created more chances which ultimately led to the winning goal.”
The Lady Techsters applied some early pressure in the match as the two strikers Dages and Mylene Roy-Ouellet combined for three shot attempts in the first nine minutes of action. Two of those shots went wide and the other was saved by the opposing keeper.
Possession shifted mostly to McNeese State the rest of the first period, generating four corner kicks and a handful of free kicks in dangerous areas. However, LA Tech played the ball well in the air for clearances and the keeper Courtney Tompkins collected half a dozen saves to keep the match scoreless going into halftime.
Five minutes into the second period, the Lady Techsters had another quality opportunity to take the lead. Roy-Ouellet had great control on her first touch from a pass and got a solid shot off from 15 yards away, but she was denied at net.
Neither squad was able to produce strong attempts on goal for much of the half, going inside of 10 minutes to go and appearing as though it would be the first ever overtime match played between them in this being the eighth meeting in the series.
With seven minutes to go, Parent took just the second corner kick of the match for the Lady Techsters. It was headed out of the end line by a Cowgirl defender, giving her another corner.
Tech capitalized on this one as Dages delivered the game-winner, her fifth career goal. Parent, playing in her first career match as a Lady Techster, was credited with the assist.
Dages and Roy-Ouellet led the squad with three shots apiece. The Lady Techsters totaled 11 shots on the night with six coming on goal.
Getting the clean sheet in net was the transfer Tompkins who registered a career-high 10 saves while tallying her first career shutout for Tech.
The Lady Techsters continue their three-game road swing to start the 2017 season on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. when they take on the Texas State Bobcats.
