RUSTON, La. - Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead, the Louisiana Tech women's soccer team lost its season opener 2-1 at Stephen F. Austin on Friday.

"We competed well," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "SFA was very good and I was really impressed with them. They passed well and had good decision making. We were a bit sloppy and they showed us the importance of the little things. Overall, I thought they dominated the possessions."

The Lady Techsters (0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead off of a goal by freshman midfielder Taylor Dennis. Junior Scottie Culton assisted in the goal with a long pass up the middle as Dennis headed the ball in the goal in the seventh minute.

The Ladyjacks (1-0) scored nearly 12 minutes later to score on a breakaway goal from forward Kim Kimmel against Tech keeper Cat Buchanan.

The two teams spent most of the second half tied 1-1 until SFA's Janae Lee scored on a rebound off of a corner kick to grab a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Techsters were outshot 13-8 with Kiva Gresham leading the Tech effort with three shots, two on goal.

"Even though they won, we had three breakaway chances down the middle," Sherry said. "When you play against top teams like this you have to take advantage of those opportunities."

Tech will have a quick turnaround as they play at Lamar on Sunday at 2 p.m.
