Techsters Shutout Devilettes
Aug. 26, 2016
RUSTON – Louisiana Tech was able to put their last game behind them by pitching a 3-0 shutout against Mississippi Valley State on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
LA Tech (2-1) was able to break through midway through the first period with a goal by Olivia Millington. Mississippi Valley State’s (0-2) backline and goalkeeper were able to stay within one goal for the next 60 minutes, but the Lady Techsters broke through with two late insurance goals by Kathryn Sloan and Kristine Emrick to seal the win.
“After a disappointing loss in the last game, this was an important game for us,” head coach Kevin Sherry said. “MVSU had a very organized defense that was hard to break down. The relief to get the first goal was great. It was good to get the win so we can now erase the memory of the loss.”
After a handful of crosses were sent into the box, the cross by Madison Doll in the 24th minute found Millington making a run at the far post and the junior buried it into the left corner for her first career goal.
LA Tech continued to pepper the MVSU goalkeeper Rita Gyasi over and over, but she held her ground and made save after save after save.
After putting together some passing combinations in tight windows, it was eventually Sloan in the 84th minute which got separation along the goal line and attacked the keeper from eight yards out with a finish to the upper left corner.
It marked career goal No. 29 for the two-time all-conference honoree and the third straight game with a point to start the season.
Two minutes later, Sloan was on the assisting end as she fed freshman striker Kristine Emrick who beat the keeper to the lower right corner for her first career goal.
In goal for LA Tech was freshman Carlotta Cartelli who picked up her first win as a Lady Techster, registering two saves in the match.
Sloan and Jenna Dages recorded five shot attempts apiece to lead all players.
LA Tech returns to action on Sunday when they host Arkansas State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
