RUSTON, La. -- In just over a span of 11 minutes on Sunday, Louisiana Tech scored four goals, two by Kiva Gresham and two by Abbie Lever, before the team added two more as they defeated Southern 6-0 in front of 126 fans at the Lady Techster Soccer Field.
The Lady Techsters, already off to the program's best start in its history, improved their record to 5-0-0 with the win, while Southern dropped to 0-5-0 on the season.
"It is always good to get a win," Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. "Southern played well, and they have good, athletic players. But, we were able to break them down and we just needed to finish. We went into halftime with the score tied 0-0. We definitely had our chances considering the amount of shots and position we had.
"Our first goal in the second half was a huge relief. Once our first goal went in [the net], we knew we were going to produce more. We are still looking for a striker. If we can find that player, we are going to be really successful. Hopefully with our hard work, one or two of our players will come through."
Gresham had a career day for Tech as she scored twice and added two assists in the span of 11 minutes in the second half. Lever scored her first collegiate goal and added another in that period as well.
"We started off a little slow, but in the second half we showed a great burst of energy" Gresham said. "Since it was a hot day, we had to be mentally tough. I think this game tested our character, and I'm glad we were able to pull through."
Gresham gave her team its first goal of the contest in the 55th minute of the second half. She followed up on her own shot, which had been blocked, before she blasted it into the net for her third goal of the season.
Olivia Lukasewich had a chance to score in the 66th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar. Fortunately for Tech, it fell at the feet of Gresham who launched it past Southern's goalkeeper for a four-goal advantage.
Rachel King scored her league-leading seventh goal of the season just shy of the 74th minute on an assist by Hikari Kurokawa. King concluded the week by scoring all seven of her goals in a three-game span.
Two crisp passes by King and Brittany Coffinbargar led to Scotti Culton's second goal of the season in the 82nd minute. Culton fielded the ball 15 yards out and shot it into the net for Tech's sixth and final goal of the match.
Tech held Southern to zero shots in the first half. In fact, the Lady Jaguars' only opportunity was a corner kick in the 23rd minute. In the second half, they were only able to muster two shots, one of which was on goal.
Cat Buchanan improved her record to 4-0-0 on the year with the win. The shutout marks her second of the season.
Tech finished the contest with a season-high 39 shots, 14 of which were on goal.
The Lady Techsters will return to action Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. against Centenary at the Lady Techster Soccer Field. For complete coverage of Lady Techster Soccer, please visit the official home of LA Tech Athletics at LATechSports.com.
