LAKE CHARLES, La. - Freshman striker Kathryn Sloan continued her goal-making ability, scoring in the sixth minute to give Louisiana Tech an early lead, but McNeese State rallied to score three consecutive goals and eventually tallied a 4-2 win over the Lady Techsters on Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Field.
"McNeese State outworked us," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "Their hard work deserved something from the game. Our young legs couldn't match their work rate. All these tough road games will help this young team mature, but it will take time."
Sloan notched her team-high fourth goal of the season for LA Tech (2-4-1), and her third of the weekend, when she had a breakaway from 25 yards out and beat the keeper.
It was the earliest goal scored by a Lady Techster since former forward Emily Brennan netted a goal last season just 1:13 into the match at Louisiana College.
After playing a near flawless game thus far, McNeese State (5-1) got the equalizer in the 34th minute on a goal by Haley Lyons who took a turnover by the Techsters and capitalized by dribbling up the middle of the box and putting it past Caitlin Updyke.
The match remained tied up at 1-1 until the Cowgirls' Jordan Beasley scored two goals within a five-minute span, the 68th and 73rd minute, to give McNeese a commanding 3-1 edge.
Despite the grind of their fifth straight road contest, the Lady Techsters cut into the lead when freshman Hannah Dauzat notched her first goal of her young career in the 81st minute when she pounced on a loose ball and placed it in the corner.
"There is a tint of frustration because we had control of the game in the first half and you couldn't see how they could score and then we gifted them a goal with a missed pass and the momentum shifted for the second half," added Sherry. "The heat and second road game contributed to tiredness which resulted in technical mistakes which led to turnovers and we got punished."
LA Tech stays on the road for another weekend as they travel to face UALR on Friday, Sept. 13 in Little Rock, Ark.
