PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Freshman Kristen Sevier scored the third hat trick in Louisiana Tech soccer history while four other Techsters combined for five scores in a convincing 8-0 victory at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday.
"I thought we played very well at times, and not so well at others," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "The conditions were somewhat difficult, but we made the best of it. I was very proud of our ball movement and defensive play, and our commitment to conditioning really showed today."
The win marked the largest margin of victory for Tech (3-1) against a Division I opponent in the program's brief history. The Lady Techsters also set school records for points (25) and assists (9) in a single game. Tech has now scored 13 goals in four games, surpassing its entire offensive output from the 2007 season.
Tech improves to 2-0-1 all-time against the Lady Lions (0-2).
Sevier joined current Lady Techster teammates Emily Cleaveland and Denise Wilson as the only Louisiana Tech players to ever score three times in a single game. For good measure, Sevier also added an assist on the Techsters' first goal of the day to tie Cleaveland's single-game record for points (7).
Tech first got on the board at 4:18 when Olivia Lukasewich got the game's initial goal off passes from Kat McCullough and Sevier. The freshman from Ontario, Canada would score the second goal for the Techsters nearly 20 minutes later off an assist from freshman Rachel King to make it 2-0.
Sevier would then score her first two goals at 31:50 (assists by Katlyn Bachan and Lukasewich) and 36:54 (Wilson) to put Tech ahead 4-0 at the half. At that point, Tech had already scored more goals in the game than it did in any full game in 2007.
Wilson found her way onto the scoresheet with a 25-yard blast in the 75th minute to make it 6-0. Sophomore Whitney Lanie then got her first career score off an assist from King to make it 7-0 in the 81st, then King would shake off several defenders and find the corner of the net to complete the scoring in the 86th minute.
Defensively, Tech held UAPB to eight total shots with only three on goal. Freshmen Jean Bernard and WAC Defensive Player of the Week Cat Buchanan combined on Tech's third straight shutout, making a collaborative three saves in the process.
Louisiana Tech will ride its first three-game winning streak since the 2006 season into Friday's contest at Delta State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Delta Field in Cleveland, Miss.
