Doll, Roy-Ouellet Score off Set Pieces in Home Victory
Sept. 10, 2017
RUSTON -- The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team has been productive this season on set pieces and Sunday was no different, scoring off two corner kicks to help register a 2-0 shutout over Jacksonville State at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
Freshman Elizabeth Doll netted a header goal almost midway through the first half and junior Mylene Roy-Ouellet tallied a goal off a deflection in the 57th minute to give LA Tech (5-1-2) its first home win of the year.
"Friday we tried three different styles of play to experiment," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "Today, we were more consistent and fluid with one way and the result changed. I would have liked to score a goal in open play, but we scored off the set pieces. We have a number of players who can really attack the ball. In women's soccer, set pieces are so important both offensively and defensively."
Doll had a couple of header opportunities early on in the match. The third one though she would capitalize on. It was the third corner kick for the Lady Techsters, this one taken in the 20th minute by senior Haley Laque.
The defender put it 12 yards out for Doll who headed it over the defenders and inside the left post for her second goal this season.
LA Tech would maintain most of the possession through the first period and take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The insurance goal they were looking for on Friday came in the 57th minute. Sophomore Alexandra LeBlanc placed the corner kick perfectly in traffic inside the six. After the ball was batted around, a Jacksonville State (3-3-2) defender try to clear it but it deflected off Roy-Ouellet's leg and went into the net.
It was the striker's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
JSU had a handful of free kicks from dangerous spots, but they were either saved by junior goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins or they were cleared out by players like Doll who played the full 90. Also going the distance was Laque and junior Makenna Johnson.
LA Tech held an 11-8 shot advantage and a 4-2 corner kick edge. Doll finished with a game-high five shot attempts, three coming on goal. Meanwhile, Tompkins registered her second clean sheet in net with five saves.
LA Tech returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to take on crosstown foe Grambling State. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
