DENTON, Texas - A header goal by North Texas in the 30th minute was all the Mean Green needed to edge Louisiana Tech, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
"It was a great effort against a top 25 level team on the road," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "The ladies followed the game plan and just fell short due to one defensive mishap."
The offensive action was mute early on between the two new Conference USA schools with only two total shots taken in the first 20 minutes of play.
LA Tech's (5-6-1, 0-2-0 C-USA) defense held firm against a stout North Texas (7-3-1, 1-0-1 C-USA) offense, but the Mean Green made their first shot on goal count off a corner kick by Lynda Hercules to Anna Flobeck who flicked a header into the net.
The Lady Techsters had back-to-back corner kicks themselves and equaled NT's shots on goal in the first half, but could not convert on the scoring chances.
The closest opportunity for the equalizer came off the foot of Brittany Beddow who took a free kick from just outside the penalty box, but the opposing keeper came up with the huge save to preserve the lead.
Despite neither team finding the net in the second period North Texas had full control, outshooting LA Tech 12-2.
Beddow had a team-high three shots. Goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke kept the Techsters in the match with six saves.
LA Tech will go for its first C-USA win on Oct. 4 when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
