RUSTON - Freshmen Kailee Hervey and Kathryn Sloan netted back-to-back goals within 40 seconds of each other to give Louisiana Tech its first ever Conference USA win, a 2-0 defeat of Marshall on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
LA Tech (6-6-1, 1-2 C-USA) was able to neutralize a powerful Marshall (6-4-1, 1-2 C-USA) squad who had only been shut out once this season prior to tonight.
"I am really proud," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "What a great victory. We asked the girls to step up and be a little bit more physical themselves and to be mentally tougher. Today was the first day I saw them step up and do that. They battled really hard. I was really proud of them."
The Thundering Herd came in outscoring their opponent 8-0 in the first period, but the backline of the Lady Techsters managed to hold Marshall to only three shot attempts going into halftime.
Freshman Annabel Prior almost got LA Tech on the board in the 29th minute when she took a set piece from outside the left corner box, but her shot hooked left of the post.
"We weathered the early storm and we realized we could because the first five, 10, 15 minutes you are always worried are we going to be strong enough," Sherry said. "We saw that we were and that gave us a base to think about what we can do going forward and you saw the results."
After a couple of minor adjustments made by the LA Tech coaching staff, the team slowed the ball down just a touch in their attacking third and it paid off in the 55th and 56th minute.
Sophomore Brittany Beddow took a rocket shot at net that deflected off a Marshall defender right to the foot of Hervey at the top of the box. She took a touch and planted it perfectly into the left corner for her fourth goal of the season.
Thirty-six seconds later freshman Jenny Bitzer delivered a long ball from midfield to the foot of Sloan who broke away down the left wing and beat the Marshall keeper in the right corner. It was Sloan's team-high sixth goal of the season.
The backline continued to keep the Thundering Herd offense at bay, only allowing two more attempts at goal.
LA Tech finished with a 13-5 shot advantage and had only two shots on goal in the second period with both going for scores.
The Lady Techsters return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6 when they host the Panthers of FIU at 12:30 p.m.
