LOGAN, Utah - The Louisiana Tech soccer team had a handful of narrowly missed opportunities to get back into the match in the second period, but eventually fell at the Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field 4-0 to the regular season conference champions Utah State.
It was the third consecutive loss for head coach Kevin Sherry and the Lady Techsters (12-4-4) to finish the 2012 season. The Aggies (11-2-6) concluded their season on an eight-game unbeaten streak.
"The ladies fought hard but it was tough playing at that altitude against a good team playing to win the regular conference championship," said Sherry. "We let in two sloppy goals in the first half which put us in difficult situation to overcome."
Despite being in a 2-0 hole from the Aggies Jade Tarver's foot and having a 9-3 shot disadvantage, the Lady Techsters came out aggressive on the second period with a few chances in the box to slice into Utah State's lead. Freshman forward Laura LeFevour took a touch in the box but her shot deflected off the fingertips of the opposing keeper just enough to alter the ball that clipped the crossbar.
LA Tech would have half a dozen corner kicks but none of the set pieces were able to connect. The Lady Techsters also had the same amount of shots in the second period, but the ball would bounce the Aggies way two more times as their other two goals both deflected off the crossbar and came down right to a Utah State player that netted the goals for the 4-0 lead.
"The difference was two-fold," said Sherry. "They were just far too quick and powerful and they finished their chances, and we were just unlucky with ours."
Freshman midfielder Brittany Beddow, who is the team's points leader with six goals and four assists on the season, led the team with four shots.
The Lady Techsters will now await the conclusion of today's matches to determine their seeding and match time for the WAC Tournament to be hosted by Utah State.
