DALLAS, Texas - Louisiana Tech dropped its first soccer match of the spring season on Saturday evening as the Lady Techsters fell to SMU 1-0 at Westcott Field.
LA Tech had won its previous three matches and put forth a great effort against an SMU squad that finished the 2012 season with a 9-8-4 overall record with wins over No. 8 ranked Central Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma and TCU.
"We lost 1-0, but it was a good game," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "To visit a powerhouse like SMU with a depleted squad and come away with only a 1-0 loss is a great performance. We learned a lot and now have a self-belief we can play at this level.
"Our incoming recruits will help strengthen certain areas of our team which will help greatly. I think the team is in a good place."
Two 45-minute halves were played, and the goal by the Mustangs came early on in the 14th minute when Shelby Redman out-muscled the Tech defender for the score.
From there on the Lady Techster defense clamped down, restricting them to only one other shot on goal.
The offense for LA Tech had its opportunities to tie the match in the second half with four shots and three corner kicks, but was unable to get a clean touch in front of the goal.
Next up for the team is a round robin tournament, hosted by UT Tyler in Tyler, Texas on April 6th. Two 60-minute matches will be played against Tyler Junior College and the host team starting at 11 a.m.
Rounding out the spring schedule will be the `Kick for the Cure' 7-a-side tournament on April 13th at Burns Park in North Little Rock, Ark.
Dates and Times are subject to change.
