LA Tech Soccer Reaches New Academic Highs, Again
April 10, 2017
RUSTON – Every year, it seems like the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team is setting new records on the pitch like this past season when they registered a program-best six league wins and made the conference tournament for a third straight year.
It also seems like every year the team is setting a new mark in the classroom as well.
The 33 LA Tech soccer players currently have a combined cumulative grade point average of 3.595, the highest it has ever been since the program started up in 2004.
“The team average GPA is one of the highest in Division I athletics in the nation, and remember this is a team of over 30 players on the roster which makes this even more incredible,” head coach Kevin Sherry said. “We, as coaches, make the team accountable for their academic performance. I am immensely proud of this team who are doing such great things on the field, in the community and in the classroom. Louisiana Tech soccer is much more than just wins and losses.”
Last week, a remarkable 31 Lady Techsters earned recognition to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2016-17 academic year. This honor is given to student-athletes who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
It was the most ever for LA Tech since joining the league in 2013, breaking last year’s total of 28. It was also the most ever by any women’s soccer team in the league during that span. It brought their four-year total to a league-best 106.
The impressive academic numbers don’t stop there. Of the 31 who made the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, 15 of them also earned the Commissioner’s Academic Medal which is given to those who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.
This amount was also a program high as well as the most achieved by any of the 14 women’s soccer squads in the conference since 2013. It brought their four-year total to 42 Academic Medals earned by 23 players which is also the most of any women’s soccer program in the league during that span.
