LA Tech Releases 2018 Soccer Schedule
June 14, 2018
RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team will kick off year No. 15 of the program in mid-August as part of the 20-game 2018 fall schedule, announced on Thursday.
The schedule for LA Tech will once again be split into 10 non-conference and 10 conference matches. There is also a perfect split in home and away games with 10 apiece.
“This is going to be a tough schedule and a huge challenge for the team as we try and achieve our goal of qualifying for the C-USA Tournament for a fifth consecutive year,” said head coach Kevin Sherry who enters his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Techsters. “It will be important that our players are prepared for the physical challenges of this schedule from day one.”
A year after spending the first three matches on the road, LA Tech will open up the slate in 2018 with four straight at home starting with the season opener on Aug. 17 versus Texas State.
The opening weekend will also include a matchup with Northwestern State. It will mark the first time since 2006 that the two teams meet up on the pitch.
The following weekend will feature home matches against Incarnate Word and ULM on Aug. 24 and 26, respectively, before LA Tech faces its first road test at Missouri State on Aug. 29.
The team will stay on the road for the next two matches at Western Illinois and Graceland, two places where Sherry was a former head coach at.
“It will be a very emotional trip for me personally as I visit the two schools I coached at prior to my hiring at LA Tech,” Sherry said. “I have fond memories of coaching there and I know I will give myself the odd spare minute to recall all the great times and successes I had at each institution.”
LA Tech will round out the non-conference portion of the schedule by hosting crosstown foe Grambling State, followed by a road weekend swing at Alcorn State and SEC foe Mississippi State.
Conference USA action gets underway on Sept. 16 when LA Tech takes on UAB in Birmingham.
“The conference schedule is always very tough with no easy games,” Sherry said. “The road trips are always the biggest challenge so how we perform at home will be a key factor in where we finish up as a team in the standings at the end of the season.”
The remainder of the road league games will come against Florida Atlantic, FIU, Rice and Marshall. The conference opponents to be played at home will be Old Dominion, WKU, UTEP, UTSA and Southern Miss. The match against the Golden Eagles will come in the regular season finale on Oct. 26.
The 2018 C-USA Women’s Soccer Tournament will be hosted by Old Dominion at the ODU Soccer Complex on Oct. 31-Nov. 4.
